In this video, I’m showing you how to make a traditional Old-Fashioned Water Pie using simple pantry ingredients just like generations before us did. No fancy ingredients. No complicated steps. Just real, humble cooking that turns basic staples into something surprisingly delicious.

🥧 Water Pie
Ingredients
1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust (homemade or store-bought)
1 ½ cups water
4 tablespoons (½ stick) butter, cut into small pieces
6 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 cup granulated sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Pinch of salt
Directions
1. Preheat Oven
Preheat oven to 400°F (205°C).
Place your pie crust into a 9-inch pie plate and crimp the edges if desired or use a frozen pie crust.
2. Add the Water
Pour 1½ cups water directly into the unbaked pie crust.
(Yes — it feels wrong. Trust the process.)
3. Mix Dry Ingredients
In a small bowl, combine:
flour
sugar
pinch of salt
Stir well so the flour is evenly distributed.
4. Sprinkle Into Pie
Evenly sprinkle the dry mixture over the water surface.
Do NOT stir. The magic happens during baking.
5. Add Butter & Vanilla
Scatter butter pieces evenly across the top.
Drizzle vanilla extract over everything.
Again — do not mix.
6. Bake
Bake at 400°F for 30 minutes.
Then reduce heat to 375°F (190°C) and bake an additional 30–35 minutes, until:
the top is lightly golden
center is set but still slightly jiggly
If crust edges brown too quickly, cover with foil.
7. Cool Completely
Let the pie cool at room temperature for at least 3–4 hours or place in refrigerator
This step is critical — the filling thickens as it cools and becomes custard-like.
✅ What You’ll End Up With
A lightly caramelized, buttery, vanilla custard filling — somewhere between chess pie and sugar cream pie — made mostly from water.
