The morning begins with Cedar and River gathering eggs and visiting our two broody ducks, cozied up together on a clutch of eggs. They stop to greet the chicks before Cedar sets off on a quiet scavenger hunt with the family, following handmade clues through the trees to find his birthday surprise near Brambles the rabbit’s home.
Axel leads the cookie-making with the rest of the kids—sugar cookies, sprinkles, and all—before we gather at the stream to enjoy them together. Mia, the dog we’re watching, playfully follows our new ducklings into the water. We walk over to check in with our neighbor Al, prune fruit from the apple tree, and end the day curled up together on the couch with a story and lots of love.
