Zone 2 training sparks more debate than almost any topic in endurance sports — and after the response to my last video, it was clear this needed a follow-up.
In this episode, I deliberately poke holes in my own Zone 2 take, address the gray areas, and explain why the real answer to “How much Zone 2 should I do?” is almost always… it depends.
As a coach and a time-crunched “professional amateur,” my goal here isn’t to argue for or against Zone 2 — it’s to help you understand when it makes sense, when it doesn’t, and how context changes everything.
We start by clearly defining what “Zone 2” actually means (so we’re not arguing past each other), then walk through the nuance that often gets lost online: training time, training history, event demands, and how close you are to race day.
This video is about decision-making, not dogma.
IN THIS VIDEO
✔️ A clear, shared definition of Zone 2 training
✔️ Why different zone models (3-zone vs 5-zone) cause confusion
✔️ What my first Zone 2 video oversimplified
✔️ Why Zone 2 isn’t always the best use of limited training time
✔️ How training history changes the Zone 2 prescription
✔️ Why gravel, XC MTB, road, and endurance events need different approaches
✔️ How far out you are from your event actually matters
✔️ A framework to decide how much Zone 2 you need
✔️ Why Zone 2 is a tool — not a rule
✔️ How to think like a coach instead of chasing internet noise
KEY TAKEAWAY
Zone 2 isn’t a magic bullet.
It isn’t one-size-fits-all.
And it shouldn’t be the only thing in your training.
Start with consistency.
Then get specific — based on your goals, your time, and your needs… not what the loudest voices online are saying.
