Most coaches think education means courses, qualifications, and certificates - but that’s only a small part of how real learning actually happens.
In this episode, we talk about our personal education journeys and how they shaped the education company we’ve built. One of us has a sports science degree, one of us doesn’t, which opens an honest conversation about formal education vs real learning, and why critical thinking matters more than memorising facts.
We break down how our relationship with learning changed once we started coaching - moving from passive education to actively seeking knowledge through experience, mentorship, self-study, and high-level environments. Injuries, mistakes, and time on the gym floor forced us to deepen our understanding of anatomy, biomechanics, communication, and coaching skill.
We also explore why education isn’t just courses, but environments, exposure, repetition, and teaching others. Explaining ideas exposes gaps in understanding and is one of the fastest ways to become a better coach. This philosophy underpins how we teach: simple foundations first, then layering complexity over time.
This episode is about building a love for learning, avoiding dependency on teachers, and why the right education should make you adaptable, confident, and effective - not just more informed.
Topics covered:
Formal education vs in-person learning
Critical thinking for personal trainers
Learning through experience and mentorship
