There are definitely elements of a great fight here but I don’t think Yu Ji or Emobodiment of Demonic Qi hit that mark. I think Yu Ji had the most potential to be an ever better fight with some changes but Demonic Qi I was pretty indifferent on all around.
Starting with Yu Ji I do like the wide variety of magic spells he has and the fact he utilizes all the elements. There’s also some melee attacks he mixes in with these combos as well so it isn’t a pure mage fight. By far the biggest flaw with this fight though is the constant teleporting across the arena. There is very minimal opportunity to punish Yu Ji because of this and even if this is offset by him having no hyper armor, it can make the fight feel a little tedious at times. Honestly I think this fight could’ve been made better if they cut down the frequency and distance of his teleporting with the trade off of giving him more hyperarmor and more melee combos. Here you pretty much have no choice but to try and stunlock him when you get your opening because he will try and teleport away otherwise. I think the elements of a good fight are here but im just not a fan of bosses where you need to constantly chase them down to deal any meaningful damage, whether they have hyperarmor or not.
Embodiment of Demonic Qi isn’t much better. I find its movements to be very clunky and some of the hitboxes to be questionable, mainly the charging spin attack. His melee moveset outside of the one 6 hit sword attack just feels very basic and generic as well. It’s sort of like Yuan Shao where I was left feeling a bit underwhelmed once I experienced the extent of his moveset. He does have some spells to mix things up but these aren’t really engaging like Yu Ji’s are and are more just “get out of the area” type spells. There’s almost no point in parrying them either because of this.
I haven’t mentioned it but up to this point I had gotten through the game with +0 armor and was up to only a +6 weapon. For this fight I decided to upgrade everything to 9 because I didn’t really want the fight to be dragged out longer than it needed to be. If Demonic Qi wasn’t so tanky I may have kept my gear at minimal levels but I was ready to beat this fight once I saw the moveset a few times. Overall I found both Yu Ji and Demonic Qi to be very average so they go into C tier. They aren’t bad fights but not ones I’d be too keen on refighting again either. I’m also glad they didn’t end up being the last bosses of the game for this reason though I will say the ending cinematic was really badass, same with the design of the Demonic Qi.
