Dong Zhuo is a boss who I’ve had a lot of changing opinions on both during the fight and after it. I do think he is a good boss but there were some things about his fight initially that affected the enjoyment of my experience so I want to go over these first.
The two major elements about Dong Zhuo that really got to me when learning him were the combination of various delayed attacks and inherent combo mixups. Now for the latter point I came to the realization a while back that all bosses just have random combo mixups within their moveset. To be completely honest I’ve found this element of Wo-Long’s combat to be a little frustrating, mainly when I’m in the beginning stages of learning a boss. I think these mixups mess with boss readability and pattern recognition. With Dong Zhuo there is this element but some REALLY deceptive delays in his attacks too. Sometimes he’ll hold his attacks slightly longer than it seems, MUCH longer than it seems or he’ll release his attack much quicker than you anticipate. There’s also the random poison darts he can decide to use on occasion as well. In general I’m not really a fan of these attacks and I think removing them entirely would make for a better fight. I generally enjoy the initial learning process of a boss but the same time I think the learning process for Dong Zhuo ended up being frustrating more as I was trying to get the rhythm down.
Now with all this said there IS a good boss fight in Dong Zhuo and I would still put him in the higher echelon bosses in up to this point. Once you get into a rhythm and learn the variations of his combos, I think he has the most fluid back and forth combat flow right behind Lu Bu. He is aggressive and attacks very frequently but there are still many punish opportunities you can get on him, even in between his combos which I always appreciate in a boss. While he does have a lot of mixups and combo variations all of them are still readable and reactable with enough time and exposure to his moveset. I am quite happy with my winning run here because I really locked in and it felt great to get into this back and forth dance with him. I’ve gone back and forth between putting him in low A tier and high B tier but I think even with my gripes, a lot of which are skill issues anyway there’s a lot about him that is good so he’ll go into low A tier.
Also changed the description on the Sun Jian video a bit but I decided to move him down to B+ tier after some more consideration with the lack of moveset complexity being the biggest reason.
