南宋淳熙年间，浙江天台营妓严蕊是个出色的艺人。她亲作曲词演唱曰：“不是爱风尘，似被前缘误。花落花开自有时，总赖东君主。去也终须去，住也如何住!若得山花插满头，莫问奴归处。”台州太守唐仲友同情严蕊的不幸遭遇，决心做护花的东君，为严蕊脱籍从良，并追究欺诈拐骗者的罪恶。谁知浙东提举朱元晦(即朱熹)听信谗言，硬勘讼案，上奏朝庭，诬陷唐仲友与严蕊有不正当关系。唐仲友被摘印反省，严蕊受尽种种非刑拷打致成残疾。但她宁愿忍受折磨，决不诬陷好人，并痛斥了在利欲面前出卖自己灵魂的未婚夫方正，她以高风亮节，保全了唐仲友的声誉。唐仲友平反升迁，深感严蕊之风骨，欲倍加报偿。这时严蕊想到的不是自己的去处，而是黎民的安危：“若得山花插满头，莫问奴归处。”毅然离去……

During the Chunxi era of the Southern Song Dynasty, Yan Rui, a courtesan from Tiantai, Zhejiang, was a talented artist. She composed and sang her own lyrics:

"It is not that I love the dust of the world; it feels more like a mistake from a past fate.
Flowers bloom and fall in their own time, all governed by the Lord of Spring.
If I must go, then I must go; if I must stay, how can I stay?
If I could wear wild mountain blossoms in my hair,
Why ask where I belong?"

The prefect of Taizhou, Tang Zhongyou, sympathized with Yan Rui’s misfortune. Determined to protect this flower, he took on the role of the "Lord of Spring," helping her leave the registry of courtesans and start a new life, and pursued justice against those who had deceived and trafficked her.

However, Zhu Yuanhui—the regional commissioner of Eastern Zhejiang, better known as Zhu Xi—believed slanderous accusations and insisted on investigating the case. He reported to the imperial court, falsely accusing Tang Zhongyou and Yan Rui of having an improper relationship. As a result, Tang Zhongyou was dismissed and ordered to reflect on his actions, while Yan Rui was subjected to brutal torture that left her disabled.

Yet she endured the suffering without falsely implicating a good man, and fiercely condemned her former fiancé, Fang Zheng, who had betrayed her for personal gain. Through her integrity and moral courage, Yan Rui protected Tang Zhongyou’s reputation.

Eventually, Tang Zhongyou was vindicated and reinstated. Grateful for Yan Rui’s noble character, he wished to repay her more than ever. But at that moment, Yan Rui did not think of her own future; she thought only of the people's well-being. Just as her song said, "If I could wear wild mountain blossoms in my hair, why ask where I belong?"—and she walked away without hesitation…
