书生龙官保和侯月英青梅竹马，两小无猜。后因龙父遭奸臣诬害罢官，两家断交，两人也不得相见。
一日官保郊游，偶拾一箭，得遇月英。原来月英已弃文习武，两人互赠文武香球私定终身。
侯父依附奸党，却将月英许配奸臣之子冷必正。月英抗婚离家出逃，路过桃花山，遇亦遭奸臣陷害的官家之后金龙，遂随之上山落草，暂且安身。
冷必正求婚未成，迁怒于龙官保，假造通盗罪名，诬害龙家父子。官保匆忙出逃。幸遇女英雄张桂英，两人义结兄妹，后因官兵追捕失散。
官保只身上京，改名赴考，得中文状元。张桂英女扮男装，也上京赴考，得中武状元。义兄妹相逢，喜极。不料冷必正又设奸计，使桂英挂帅印，官保为先锋，征讨桃花山，欲借刀杀人。
官保文官武用，上阵交锋，不料因祸得福，巧遇月英。但月英发现香球落在桂英之手，误认官保变心，痛责之，又下山大战桂英.....

Long Guanbao and Hou Yueying were childhood companions, innocent and inseparable. But after Long’s father was falsely accused by a corrupt minister and removed from office, the two families severed ties, and the young pair could no longer meet.

One day, while out in the countryside, Long happens upon a stray arrow and unexpectedly reunites with Hou. She has since forsaken scholarly pursuits to train in martial arts.I n a quiet moment, they exchange a pair of scented silk balls—one literary, one martial—as a symbol of their bond. These Twin Charms, rich with meaning, seal their lifelong promise.

However, Hou’s father, now aligned with the treacherous faction, betroths her to Leng Bizheng, the son of the very minister who destroyed Long’s family. Hou defies the marriage and flees. While passing Peach Blossom Mountain, she encounters Jinlong, a displaced noble wronged by the same conspirators. She joins his outlaw band, seeking shelter.

Leng, enraged by her escape, falsely accuses Long and his father of colluding with bandits. Forced to flee, Long meets the valiant Zhang Guiying, and the two swear siblinghood. Yet, amid pursuit by government forces, they become separated.

Long travels alone to the capital, adopts a new identity, and excels in the imperial examination, emerging as the top scholar. Zhang, disguised as a man, also enters the exams and becomes the top martial graduate. The sworn siblings are joyfully reunited.

But Leng plots anew. He appoints Zhang as general and Long as her vanguard, commanding them to lead a campaign against the "bandits" of Peach Blossom Mountain—hoping they will eliminate Hou without revealing his schemes.

Though a scholar, Long takes to the battlefield with courage. There, he is reunited with Hou. Yet when she discovers that her perfumed silk ball has ended up in Zhang’s hands, she believes Long has betrayed her. In anguish and anger, she denounces him and descends the mountain to challenge Zhang in a fierce duel...
