姑苏望族南豪申贵升年幼失怙，少有才志而豪放不羁。业师张国勋以女雅云婚之。雅云虽贤淑但性自负，夫妻情趣相悖几至反目成仇。一日挚友沈君卿邀游於三堂，遇一尼姑荷锄栽桃，申吟诗嘲讽，未料竟遭和韵讥笑，惊为奇遇，询之，方知乃法华庵三太王志贞。屡屡诚意相访，乃得互诉心曲。决意断孽缘而成俦，奈志犹未遂而疾笃，时志贞已怀身孕，弥留之际以家宝玉蜻蜓授之含怨而逝。临盆后，志贞忍痛弃子，腹配玉蜻蜓为标志。弃婴为徐侍郎夫人杨氏拾得，杨氏年迈无子，惊为天赐，取名元宰爱若掌珠。恰巧杨氏与张雅云有世交，寄元宰为雅云螟蛉义子，乃成一子三母。元宰及长，聪颖过人，十六岁中解元。后因雅云与杨氏争子，乃得血书玉蜻蜓。元宰详血书而知母名，遂访母法华庵，几经周折，情愫乃通，真相乃白。经元宰泣血劝诉，始消雅云与志贞之宿怨。然一泓苦酒殃及两代，虽母子重聚，隐患尚存……

Shen Guisheng, a young master from a prominent family in Gusu, was orphaned at a young age. Though talented and ambitious, he was also wild and unrestrained. His teacher, Zhang Guoxun, arranged for Guisheng to marry his daughter, Ya Yun. While Ya Yun was virtuous and well-mannered, she possessed a proud nature. This led to a clash of personalities and a deeply unhappy marriage, with the couple growing so estranged they were almost enemies.

One day, Guisheng's close friend, Shen Junqing, invited him on an outing to Santang. There, they encountered a nun carrying a hoe, planting peach trees. Guisheng recited a poem, mocking her. To his surprise, the nun responded with a wittily rhyming poem of her own, ridiculing him in turn. Astonished by this encounter, Guisheng inquired and learned she was Wang Zhizhen, also known as the Third Mistress, from the Fahua Nunnery.

Greatly intrigued, Guisheng paid her several sincere visits, and during these meetings, they opened their hearts to each other, developing deep feelings. They resolved to be together, which meant Guisheng would have to end his unhappy marriage (referred to as a "sinful bond"). However, before he could achieve this, he fell gravely ill. By this time, Zhizhen was already pregnant with his child. On his deathbed, filled with resentment and unfulfilled desire, Guisheng gave Zhizhen his family heirloom, a jade dragonfly, as a token before passing away.

After giving birth, Wang Zhizhen, in immense pain and with no other choice, abandoned her son. She placed the jade dragonfly on his belly as an identifying mark. The abandoned infant was found by Madam Yang, the wife of Vice Minister Xu. Madam Yang was elderly and childless, and she saw the baby as a gift from heaven. She named him Yuanzai and cherished him as her own.

Coincidentally, Madam Yang was an old family friend of Zhang Ya Yun (Guisheng's first wife). Through this connection, Yuanzai also became Ya Yun's adopted godson. Thus, Yuanzai grew up with "one son and three mothers" (his birth mother, his adoptive mother, and his father's first wife as a godmother).

Yuanzai grew into an exceptionally intelligent young man. At the young age of sixteen, he achieved the highest score in the provincial imperial examinations, earning the title of "Jieyuan."

Later, a dispute arose between Zhang Ya Yun and Madam Yang over Yuanzai. This conflict inadvertently led to the discovery of a blood-written letter and the jade dragonfly that had been left with him. Reading the letter, Yuanzai learned the name of his birth mother. He then set out to find Wang Zhizhen at the Fahua Nunnery. After many twists, turns, and emotional challenges, their feelings were acknowledged, and the full truth of his parentage was revealed.

Through Yuanzai's tearful and heartfelt pleas, the long-standing bitterness and resentment between Zhang Ya Yun and Wang Zhizhen eventually began to dissipate. However, the deep suffering caused by these events had already cast a shadow over two generations. Although mother and son were reunited, underlying troubles and unspoken sorrows still lingered.
