Technically, the collection draws on the logic of the modern fable: compression, leaps in time, and the acceptance of magic as part of the moral order of the world rather than as an exception. Yet these are fables without preaching and without redemption. The characters are fragile and hesitant, trapped by the weight of family, body, memory, and desire. They try to learn how to live inside this weight, and they fail to escape it or rebel against it.
At its core, this work suggests that strangeness in Bender’s fiction is not an escape from American reality, but a way of expressing its deep emotional truth. It is a reality that looks stable on the surface, yet is filled inside with invisible burdens—burdens that can only be expressed when they turn into stone, fire, or a violent image that cannot be forgotten.
