The Sunflower Cast a Spell to Save Us from the Void is a quiet but deeply unsettling poetry book. It stands at the meeting point of dreams, memory, the body, and hidden forms of violence. This book should not be read as separate poems. It is one broken, continuous work, like a notebook of dreams and wounds, written in a world where meaning slowly fades and violence becomes part of everyday life.
Jackie Wang uses dreams as a way of knowing, not as an escape from reality. In her writing, dreams reveal things that daily language cannot easily name: fear, pressure, desire, and violence that hides inside close relationships and ordinary details. Childhood, the body, family, love, and even food become tense spaces, where what is called “normal” is forced, and the body is asked to stay silent.
The title reflects the heart of the book. The sunflower is a fragile being that keeps turning toward the light even when the light is gone. This image describes Wang’s poetry. Her writing does not promise comfort or happiness, but it also refuses to surrender to emptiness. The “void” here is not an abstract idea.
