After my last time chasing NRFF when they derailed in Nesquehoning, I decided to come back on a nice late winter day, especially now with the days getting longer, to give the North Reading Fast Freight another chase.
Sunday March 15th was that day, and I decided to start my chase at East Mahanoy Junction in Barnesville, PA, where the Main Line splits off from the M&S Branch. I opted to start here due to less than Ideal lighting situations below Tamaqua as there wasn't a cloud in the sky. Like clockwork, the NRFF7 left North Reading on schedule and an hour or so later came into view at EMX with the usual trio of SD50s, SD50M 5033 ahead of the two former CSX SD50-2s, 5019 and 5020 with a big train today. After catching them here, I hustled over to Jim Thorpe and Lehigh Gorge State Park to watch them crossing the new bridge over the Lehigh River, an angle I need to revisit and improve on next time I chase. After here, It was onto White Haven where the train begins their climb towards Penobscot, I catch them at a few locations before they arrive, where they swap cars and head back south at dusk with the former CSX SD50-2 leading..
