Not Abandoned: Rare MBTA Work Train on Old, Overgrown Railroad Tracks

About this video: On May 23, 2024, the MBTA’s north side work extra crew operated a train from Somerville to Everett, Massachusetts to drop off CTC-1B cab cars 1627 and 1642 at the Schnitzer plant where the two coaches were to be scrapped on site. In order access the Schnitzer plant by rail, the work train needed to travel through an industrial park located in Everett know as the “Coke Works” on a line that is only ever used by local freight jobs. In fact, this MBTA work train run was only the second time an MBTA train has used this track in recent history (based off of research that I have done). The consist of this train featured caboose/shoving platform “C-1” at the front, followed by two MBTA gondola cars, the two CTC-1Bs, and GP40MC-3 1137 providing power. The return trip of this train featured the same equipment excluding the cab cars which were scrapped on site at Schnitzer later on in the same day. This video is meant to highlight the fascinating rail line that this train used to perform this move. Another video surrounding this train will be posted in the days following this upload and will show new angles and shots of this unique operation.
