In the late 1890s, as part of Birmingham's massive water supply scheme, engineers built the massive foundations of Dol y Mynach (planned to be 101 ft / 31m high and 938 ft / 286m long) alongside the famous Elan Valley dams like Caban Coch, Garreg Ddu, Pen y Garreg, and Craig Goch. But two World Wars, followed by advances in civil engineering, led to the project being abandoned in favor of the single, enormous Claerwen Dam upstream (completed in the 1950s). Today, only the 10m-high, 120m-long base remains – a concrete and stone skeleton with huge "plum" blocks (up to 10-ton stones set in concrete) visible when water levels drop.
