Your iliacus muscle is the lesser known twin of the psoas muscle. Together, this unique pair of muscles is called the iliopsoas. They share a common tendon and, if you’ve never seen the anatomy, yes you have one on both sides!
Just like the psoas muscle, there is not clear agreement on the role of the iliacus. However, we know that mobilizing it is extremely effective at helping relieve back and hip pain. Not only will it help you open up your hip during sports like running but it will also help you close the hip at the bottom of your squat as it’s better able to shorten to create space for hip flexion.
The Iliopsoas muscle may have a role in pelvic floor function and breathing as well. You’ll be going through your abdominals and mostly other muscular structures to get to the iliacus muscle so there’s less need to be gentle with this one. However it is often tender!
