Meandering through the skulled 1700s tombstones of the part ruined St Margaret’s - Cley next the Sea

Описание: Cley next the Sea was an important wool trading port in the middle ages which brought great wealth to the area. A prime example of this wealth is the incredibly grand St Margaret’s Church (of cathedral type proportions) set back on a hill opposite the village green. Dating back to the early 14th century it once would have looked over the busy harbour but over the centuries the seas retreated and now the church is stranded far from the shore. The body of the church is intact but the north and south transepts are ruined and open to the elements. The master mason was Mr William Ramsey. The Ramsey family were responsible for the Palace of Westminster and parts of Norwich Cathedral. However when the bubonic plague arrived in 1349, Ramsey and his son both succumbed to the disease. During this time trade at the port was severely disrupted, however half a century later trade and confidence was restored and the mighty south porch was built. By the early 16th century the church was at the peak of its powers but then the English reformation happened and further developments, repairs and funding ceased. The graveyard is scattered with graves dating way back to the 1700s, expertly ornamented with bones and skulls aswell as archangels. St Margaret’s is now recognised as a grade one listed building and is much treasured by its congregation, the local community, and visitors alike.
