Описание: William de Glanville ‘Lord of Bromholm’ was born at the end of the 11th century in Bacton and founded the priory in 1113. Bromholm Priory once housed a holy relic said to be so powerful that it could raise the dead. This relic was believed to have magical healing power and was said to have come from the real cross of the crucifixion. Stories began to circulate that "divine miracles" were taking place in Bromholm. One man wrote, "dead folk were restored to life, the blind saw, the lame walked, lepers were cleansed and those possessed by devils were freed". Consequently, in April 1226, Henry III visited Bromholm and granted a three day festival in celebration of the cross and the site was expanded. By the 15th century a famous historian claimed that, "39 had been raised from the dead and 19 blind restored to sight." However in February 1537, Henry VIII sent his chief commissioner, to collect the relics at Bromholm. It is believed the relic was sold at this point because the cross disappeared from history. The priory was consequently suppressed under the dissolution of the monasteries and the buildings fell into ruin, with the majority disbanded for their valuable stone. All that remains today are the ruined gatehouse, chapter house, and the north transept of the priory church. In 1940 the base of the central tower of the church was modified to act as a pillbox in case of German invasion during World War 2. Local legend says that a subterranean tunnel (divided by a huge pair of golden gates) runs under the priory to the site of Gimingham Hall (4 miles along the coast). Folklore also rumours a secret tunnel linking the priory to nearby St Margaret’s Church in Paston.
