A 6.5 mile hike from Mardale Head located in the stunning valley of Haweswater. Fantastic views of the reservoir and surrounding Far Eastern Fells in The Lake District.
This route bags 2 Wainright Fells of Branstree and Selside Pike. Starting from Gatesgarth Pass on a good track to ascend a Circular route first into Branstree 712m to head along an easy grassy ridge to Selside Pike 655m.
The route then descends along the historical Old Corpse Road, which was used when the old village of Mardale existed before the water board flooded the valley to provide water for Chmbria, Lancashire and Manchester. The villagers used the Corpse Road to transport the deceased from the village of Mardale to the nearest church yard at Shap. When the village flooded the villagers dug up their deceased relatives to transport them on their final journey to rest at Shap.
This is an easy hike offering superb views down to Haweswater.
