Titles: In 1985, High Wycombe celebrated the 700th anniversary of the Mayoralty. The anniversary was marked on Sunday 12th May by a Medieval Festival and Joust including fighting foot soldiers along with the Band of the Royal Green Jackets.
Cabbie (Terry Gaines) is hailed as the new Town Crier. Betty Barratt in Mayoral chain accompanies MP Ray Whitney (at Loake’s Park?) with other dignitaries. Every year in May the outgoing and incoming mayor and councillors undergo a public weighing ceremony. Loss of weight during the previous year denotes zeal and is greeted by cheers, a heavier result proclaims sloth and produces jeers. Betty Barratt celebrates result of her weigh. Procession with mayor and councillors. Reggie Goves the new Mayor and Deputy Mayor Doreen Beale are weighed. Other councillors including Kathleen Peatey, Pam Priestley?
On Sunday 30th June there is 700th anniversary Carnival held on the Rye with a float procession with the Band of H M Royal Marines CinC Fleet. There is a fun fair and fete with many displays, a bar with refreshments and bands. Floats included WADSAD (Wycombe and District Sports Association for the Disabled), Youth Crime prevention panel, Wycombe District Swimming Club, Ye Mucky Duck, Training Ship Jaguar Unit (High Wycombe Sea Cadets), Majorettes, Chesham All Girls Band, Black and White, people dressed as historic figures from Wycombe’s past, American Lorettes Majorettes. There were traditional crafts on display, Mummers, judo demonstration, fly past of [Lancaster?], commemorative merchandise on sale and Reggie Goves looks at Mayoral traditions on display.
The custom of Beating of the Bound was revived on 9th June 1985. The footage shows some participants dressed in leaf camouflage and beating the stone on the side of the church with canes. They go on to go round the whole boundary including the river. Footage of Wycombe Half Marathon with Reggie Goves and a mayoress(?) greeting the finishers.
