This film provides an insight into the provision of care at the Leonard Cheshire homes in 1969. It discusses the origin story of Cheshire homes and seeks to give an insight into the experience of those who live in a Cheshire home. Interviews with residents are presented in their own words with an accompanying voice over from Joyce Grenfell, who introduces each speaker.
Participants including Jill from Great Missenden, Mary from High Wycombe, Mike from Ealing, Betty from Farnham Common, Wendy from Ruislip talk about the challenges of securing care provision in their own homes and positive experiences of care they have received.
There is some discussion around the particular care requirements that might be needed as well as mobility aids; including ramps, hoists and wider doorways.
Participants talk about the disadvantage of living in a hospital; including the routine and early enforced bed times.
Participants recount advantages of Cheshire homes including friendly staff, good food, increased mobility, improved wellbeing, laughter, discussions, being allowed visitors, having day trips out. Comradeship and a sense of community is conveyed in how residents talk about their experiences of Cheshire homes. Importance of volunteers to the home and the need for donations to continue the work.
Ends with an appeal for donations and volunteers to spend time with residents, help them visit relatives, etc.
