It's been awhile since I played this, so after awhile of re-acclimating myself, I finally go and meet Haagthka in her castle.
This was a feature on my stream for a few years to reward subscribers. For every month someone subscribed, they got 1 hour of request time, and I made a google document to keep track of everyone's time. I did this for several years until discontinuing it. The subscriber document would eventually be converted into the "plan" sheet, but the old record of people's used hours still exists beneath it, which you can see here: https://tinyurl.com/5d5mumxw
A subscriber request by Monocule for Drakkhen. A very early SNES game and one of it's first "RPG's," though this is not the usual menu style turn based RPG but more of a auto battler. The original version of Drakkhen was by the famous French company Infogrames, but this port is by Kemco, a Japanese company known for porting western computer games to console. Although I haven't tried the original computer game the port seems pretty close, albeit with it's own original soundtrack which from what I can tell is quite a bit better. Kemco has done this before with games like Shadowrun, which has a phenomenal soundtrack that easily makes the NES version the premiere version.
The soundtrack for this game is quite noteworthy as it is a big reason for the game's coolness, it is kind of weird and surreal and fits the surreal nature of the game. It also has a ton of atmosphere. What we have here is a surrealistic 3D auto-battling RPG where you move around a very abstract 3D field in the overworld, battling odd looking enemies. Dungeons are more point and click and use pixel art as you explore room by room. This game is so odd and surrealistic that although it was successful (mainly due to being such an early SNES game) it was often called a bad game. At this point I think it's gained a cult following, and I find it's surrealism and atmosphere to be quite cool. Honestly I think the simplistic auto-battling combat system is quite fun as well.
The game has a few obtuse elements that can be roadblocks, but for the most part the puzzle solving is pretty lenient and it doesn't take long to finish. I think this is a minor hidden gem that is worth checking out!
