Enjoying Ducks and Cranes at the Reifel Bird Sanctuary

In March 2023, I visited the George C Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary near Ladner, B.C. This well-loved sanctuary is managed by the British Columbia Waterfowl Society, a non-profit group whose mission it is to conserve and promote waterfowl and wetlands in the province. The sanctuary is home to over 300 species of birds and is one of the few places where the public is allowed to hand-feed birds. To keep the birds healthy and safe, the only food allowed is wheat and other mixes sold by the sanctuary. Not surprisingly, the ducks, cranes and blackbirds have become accustomed to human handouts! It has become so popular (up to 100,000 visitors a year) that reservations are now required to enter. It is well worth a visit.
