This compilation of diving and surfacing is the second in the series of ducks on water in Stanley Park, Vancouver, BC. I have included Goldeneyes, Common Scaups, Mergansers, and other waterfowl in this compilation.

My intent here was to capture the grace and beauty of the movements of ducks as they settle on water, glide, dive under and resurface. I have always been intrigued by the duck's ability to inhabit both land and water with such natural facility and grace. Though there is the evidence of their telltale trails of surface bubbles and rings of bright water, filming these fast-moving ducks gets further complicated due to the unpredictability of where they will surface.

Interestingly, the Hooded Mergansers featured here, find their prey underwater by entirely by sight, and can even change their eyes' refractive properties to improve their underwater vision. In addition, they have an extra eyelid, called a "nictitating membrane," which is transparent and helps protect the eye during swimming, like a pair of goggles.
