Recorded in Hollywood on March 1, 1942, this record is one of only two records by Czexan swing bandleader Adolph Hofner (1916-2000) that were issued in Columbia's "ethnic" series marketed to Bohemian speaking record buyers. Most notable about this disc is that the "A" side contains a recording of the so-called Texas-Czech national anthem "Farewell to Prague" ("Když jsme opustili Prahu," also known as "Praha Polka" or the "Shiner Song") which may be the earliest recorded version of the song, or at least the earliest one of Texan origin, predating Hofner's more famous recording of the song (Imperial 8027, 1948) by some six years, and Joe Patek's seminal version (Martin M103, c.1947) by about five years. On the "B" side is found the waltz "Švestková Alej" or "The Prune Song", which Hofner also redid for Imperial in 1948.
00:00 - "Farewell to Prague" (Traditional)
02:55 - "Svestkova Alej (The Prune Song)" (K. Echtner)
I claim no proprietary rights of any sort over this recording nor the source from which it was extracted. It is presented here in good faith in the interest of the conservation of Texas music history in a strictly not-for-profit context. Should any complaint arise from the copyright holder, I will remove it without need for further action.
