Описание: In this week’s Singapore Hawker Food, the SmallCityIsland duo was at Margaret Drive Hawker Centre to find the winner halal hawker food there. With an influx of residents in the new Margaret Drive and Dawson neighbourhood, the need for a hawker centre to provide food options became evident. So along with the rebuilt estate, the revamped hawker centre returned with new fixtures and fittings. This two-storey food hub is also essential to the neighbourhood due to the permanent closure of Tanglin Halt Hawker Centre. So, with the setting up of Margaret Drive Hawker Centre, the Tanglin Legends have moved here. This Hawker Centre is located a stones throw away from Queenstown MRT stations which makes it very convenient to get to.

So if you’re in the Queenstown area and in search of a lunch spot, we suggest dropping by Margaret Drive Hawker Centre for the many variety of Singapore Hawker Food.

01 #01-33 Surkanih Chicken Rice: Roasted Chicken Rice ($4.00)

Sukarnih Chicken Rice is a muslim stall selling hainanese chicken rice, formerly located in Tanglin Halt. The roast chicken is tender and moist with nice roasted flavours. The chicken is served soaked in soya sauce with a very mild hint of sweetness. The rice is fragrant and is flavourful.

02 #01-25 Lontong Sedap: Nasi Sambal Goreng Daging ($6.00)

Lontong Sedap has been at Tanglin Halt for a good many number of years and has its own following. We decided to be adventurous and try out their Nasi Sambal Goreng Daging. The set comes with white rice with sambal goreng (tofu, tempeh and long beans), rendang (beef), bergedil (deep fried potato patty), serunding (spicy shredded coconut floss) and sambal. So did we like it?


03 #02-25 Farokh & Nisa Family Food: Mee Kuah ($5.00)

Farokh & Nisa Family Food has been around since I can remember! For comforting home-cooked Muslim fare, humble but hearty dishes like Nasi Goreng Ayam and Kway Teow Goreng. My go to at Farokh & NIsa would be the Mee Kuah. It is among my list of comfort food. Mee Kuah is essentially a South East Asian born Indian Muslim noodle dish. It’s a bowl (or plate, at times) of noodles sitting in a thick, rich, usually mutton broth, enriched with spices and masala.

What is a hawker?

A hawker in the Singapore context is someone who sells street food and now known as hawker food. In the old days, this was from a roadside stall or a pushcart. These days, hawkers can be found in coffee shops, hawker centres, and food courts (air-conditioned hawker centres). Hawkers usually specialise in a particular cuisine, sometimes in just one dish.

You can find hawker centres and food courts everywhere, including downtown whereas coffee shops tend to be located in the suburbs.
