Описание: In this week’s Singapore Hawker Food, the SmallCityIsland duo was at Haig Road Hawker Centre. Being in the Malay district of Singapore, Haig Road Hawker Centre is a nice escape for you to enjoy some good Halal Hawker Food, which the hawker centre has an extensive offering.

Located mere minutes from Geylang Serai market, Haig Road Hawker Centre is a bustling food centre which has been a mandatory stop for many. The hawkers in the centre has been around for many years, even some whom have been here for more than half a decade. So, you can say that some of them are legends in their own rights.

Hj Waliti Hj Mazuki
Mee Rebus ($3.50)

Hj Waliti Hj Mazuki is a 50-year-old stall directly opposite the popular Afandi Hawa & Family. The stall has many variations of Mee Soto, but we chose the mee rebus. For the price of $3.50 ($3.00 without egg), it was at the lower end of the price spectrum for current times. This serving of mee rebus comes with a boiled egg with yellow noodles and bean sprouts served on a plate with mee rebus gravy added. It is topped with chopped green chilli, spring onions and fried shallots. This mee rebus is absolutely delicious! It is probably among one of the best mee rebus I had tasted.

Haig Road Nasi Lemak
Oxtail Soup ($9.00)

Looking at Haig Road Nasi Lemak menu display, we can tell that their main servings would be the Nasi Padang and Nasi Lemak. However, the oxtail soup really caught our eye. One of the reason that we were excited for the oxtail soup is due to the fact that oxtail soup is not easy to find in a hawker centre style setting and the second reason, we heard the Indonesian accent of the staff. Oxtail soup (soup bontot), being an Indonesian dish, who better to prepare it but an Indonesian.

Haig Road Putu Piring
Putu Piring ($2.50 / 4pcs)

Haig Road Putu Piring has been an icon. Michelin recommended and Netflix featured, this traditional steamed rice cake is something not to be missed when you are at Haig Road Hawker centre. For many, besides indulging in the delightfully soft and fluffy putu piring, it brings a sense of nostalgia and we are one of them. These cakes have been a part of our lives since our childhood. Haig Road Putu Piring, which began as a roadside stall in the 1930s and has since expanded and grown tremendously.

A hawker in the Singapore context is someone who sells street food and now known as hawker food. In the old days, this was from a roadside stall or a pushcart. These days, hawkers can be found in coffee shops, hawker centres, and food courts (air-conditioned hawker centres). Hawkers usually specialise in a particular cuisine, sometimes in just one dish. Hawkers prepare a variety of food ('hawker food') for people who dine and mingle at hawker centres. These centres serve as 'community dining rooms' where people from diverse backgrounds gather and share the experience of dining over breakfast, lunch and dinner.

You can find hawker centres and food courts everywhere, including downtown whereas coffee shops tend to be located in the suburbs.
