These drills will teach the long and short vowels so that they will stick long term. You will also be able to PRINT OUT a FREE WORD LIST that includes all the long and short vowels as well as instructions and additional information. These drills are perfect for children that have struggled with the long and short vowels as well as children that have been diagnosed with dyslexia, auditory processing disorder, visual processing disorders, or other learning disabilities. Being unable to decode words with the long and short vowels in them is incredibly frustrating - these drills will end that frustration.

List of sounds that may need to be targeted: I work with students that are often several years behind grade level in reading. They have figured out the sounds single letters make and even consonant vowel consonant (CVC) words: cat, hat, bat. But, beyond that many get stuck in a phonetic minefield. You may want to start targeting the following sounds: the long and short vowels, consonant blends, ph, kn, ou, words ending in ng, and nk, words that include igh, eigh, and ugh, tion, ce, ci, and cy, Take them on one at a time - once one is mastered, move to the next one.

You will find a complete wordlist for the long and short vowels attached to the video (described above. My online reading course, https://www.nofearreading.com/, contains wordlists for all of these sounds (and more). However, you may also create your own word list from resources on the internet.

Dyslexia is a learning disability that makes reading and language-related tasks difficult. It occurs because of disruptions in how the brain processes writing/text/images so they can be understood. Most people learn they have dyslexia during childhood, and it’s typically a lifelong issue. People with dyslexia may experience visual processing challenges while reading, such as text appearing blurred, shimmery, or double. They may also have difficulty locating words on the page, skip words, reverse, or transpose.

Keith Deltano stayed back in third grade because he could not read. He has dyslexia, ADHD, and auditory processing disorder. Your child will learn to decode, read fluently, and comprehend what they are reading. They will even learn strategies they will use to pass the EOGs (End of Grade tests.)
