Women in Switzerland got the right to vote in 1971 – this was one of the last countries in Europe to allow women to vote and be elected to government positions. Interestingly, Switzerland is now one of the leaders in terms of the percentage of women in politics. But this fact made me freeze for a while.
Hard to imagine that 50 years ago women in Switzerland couldn’t vote due to some articles in the Swiss Constitution. This changed only after the second referendum on this question held in 1971.
In this short video, I will explain why this happened to Switzerland and how it was finally sorted out. Also, I will outline how and when women get the right to vote in a couple of other countries around the world.
