In 1570, Ivan the Terrible, the first tsar of Russia, decided to kill the entire city of Novgorod for his suspicions in possible treason. Actually, this was a cruel but effective political step to show to other Russian lands what can happen if they don’t accept the power of the tsar.
This dreadful episode of Russian history is significant as it shows which political concepts have been dominating in this region.
