In early November of 2018, I set out to make it to #InspirationPoint by first reaching #EchoMountain in Altadena, California (near Pasadena). Most of this hike is done via Sam Merrill Trail. I arrived in the morning and entered past a large crowd through the Cobb Estate. This was certainly a very popular #hiking destination. On the way up the mountain, I could see smoke from the Woolsey Fire. Although, that did not prevent hikers from seeing the amazing views. USA Today once rated this hike to Echo Mountain one of the 10 great North American hikes. It wasn’t long before I began to find ruins and historic sites built around the Echo Mountain House that once was here almost a century ago. The view here was just stunning of the Los Angeles cityscape. The coolest feature here was an Echo Phone that faced the mountain. People could scream into this and attempt to hear their echo. I could hear it a few times when others tried it out, although the echo audio may have not been captured on this recording.

Later I set out for Inspiration Point. I made my ascent through the canyon on moderately difficult switchbacks. I finally made it to Inspiration Point. From here one could see a front row view of Mt. Wilson. Additionally, there are lookout viewing points that highlight several Southern California sights that may be visible from here. This was the perfect place to have lunch and enjoy the scenery in shade. I then headed to the Sam Merrill trail to complete the Inspiration Point Loop. It was really hard to leave the peak of these mountains. I realized the Sam Merrill trail is the much easier part of the Inspiration Point Loop. Also, there were such wonderful views along the way of nearby mountains. I was also really starting to see the smoke fill the air below from the wild fires. I made it back to Echo Mountain and soon after back to my car at the trailhead.
