A huge thank you to CFO Tyrone Burrowes for setting off the Rakaia Volunteer Brigade's Carter Air Raid Siren on Monday at 7:30pm.
We caught some sharp video of the siren itself with the big single-door opening showcasing the front of Rakaia 647 in all its beauty.
In New Zealand, many volunteer fire brigades use air raid sirens as a way to alert firefighters and the community of an emergency. This system dates back decades and is still used in many rural and small-town areas.
Here’s why!
Reliable Alert System.
Sirens are loud and unmistakable, ensuring that volunteer firefighters, who may be at home or work, hear them and respond quickly. Unlike phone alerts, sirens don’t rely on cell networks, which can fail in remote areas or during major emergencies.
Wide Coverage.
Sirens can be heard over a large distance, even in areas with poor phone signal or internet access. This is useful in rural communities where volunteers may be spread out.
Community Awareness.
Many small towns are used to the sound and understand it signals an emergency. It informs locals that firefighters are responding.
Backup for Digital Alerts.
While modern technology (pager systems, mobile apps) is used, sirens serve as a backup in case of technical failures.
Speed and Efficiency.
Volunteers don’t have to check their phones—they hear the siren and know they need to get to the fire station immediately.
