Emsworth Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Описание: Located in the county of Hampshire, and around five miles east of Portsmouth, is the town of Emsworth.

Geographically, Emsworth is situated by the border between Hampshire and West Sussex, and on the south coast adjacent to Chichester Harbour, featured prominently at the start of the walk. Its history as a town dates back to the 13th century, first when King John divided the manor of Warblington into two, marking Emsworth off as a settlement in its own right, and later when in 1239 his son, Henry III, awarded it the right to hold a weekly market and an annual fair.

Since the medieval era, Emsworth had a busy shipbuilding industry owing to its coastal location. This eventually declined by the 19th century due to the presence of more advanced shipyards in areas like Portsmouth. Another notable industry in Emsworth is fishing - particularly in regard to oyster fishing. This hit a peak around the 19th century, but fell into decline after a typhoid outbreak occurred in 1902, claiming the lives of the Dean of Winchester and two other people after they had consumed contaminated oysters at a banquet, with many others falling ill. After the source of this had been traced back to Emsworth, and a discharge of sewage into the sea close to the oyster ponds, the industry never recovered. However, it has been revived on a small scale since the beginning of the 21st century.

In 1847 the railway arrived in Emsworth. The station today forms part of the West Coastway Line, which runs between Brighton and Southampton Central.
