Located in the county of Norfolk, and around 15 miles north, and slightly east, of King's Lynn, is the town of Hunstanton.
The origins of Hunstanton go back to circa 855 AD when the future king of East Anglia, Edmund, landed on the Norfolk coast around this area. Edmund would become king soon afterwards, and reigned until 869, when he was martyred by the Vikings.
While Hunstanton is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, this is in reference to the village we now refer to as Old Hunstanton, about a mile to the north. The town of today, initially known as New Hunstanton, as well as Hunstanton St Edmunds, has its origins in 1846. When Henry L’Estrange Styleman Le Strange inherited around 10,000 acres of land, he conceived the idea of making a new 'watering place' with open views of the sea. In 1861 he became director of the rail company that would build the town's erstwhile railway station the following year.
The Lynn and Hunstanton Railway opened in 1862, just a few months after Le Strange's death. This line connected Hunstanton to King's Lynn and Wells-next-the-Sea, bringing in many Victorian holidaymakers in its heydey. However, the station, along with the rest of the line, closed in 1969. Today, public transport to Hunstanton consists of direct buses from King's Lynn, Wells-next-the-Sea and various other nearby locations.
Following le Strange's death in 1862, work was continued by his eldest son Hamon le Strange. Hunstanton's first pier opened in 1870, and was 830 feet (around 250 metres) long. A pavilion was added in the 1890s, but was destroyed by fire in June, 1939, and was not replaced. In 1978 a storm destroyed most of the pier, and in 2002 the remaining section was destroyed by a fire. In the aftermath, the current pier was built, although not a pier in the traditional sense as it doesn't extend into the sea.
