In my restoration workshop, celebrating 30 years this year, I restore antique furniture with pleasure, care, and craftsmanship. This video offers a concise insight into the restoration process: reviving the original finish, fitting a new leather writing surface, and repairing the veneer with carefully matched inserts, bringing function and character back in balance.

This French Louis XIV style bureau is built with a refined sense of proportion: a gently curved top, cabriole legs and richly cast brass mounts. The desk carries a leather-inlaid writing surface framed by a shaped wooden edge, a construction that asks for precision when time and use have taken their toll.

At the start of the restoration, all brass mounts were carefully removed. This allowed thorough cleaning of both the fittings and the underlying wood, and made it possible to address movement and wear without forcing or masking problems. The mounts were cleaned by hand with water and soap, preserving their patina while removing accumulated dirt.

The top had loosened over time and was re-secured to restore structural stability. During inspection, damaged veneer areas were found in the top. These were repaired with matching veneer inserts, cut and fitted along the original grain direction, after which the entire veneer surface was gently cleaned.

Special attention was given to the shaped edge of the top. This curved border was refined and finished so the transition between veneer, solid wood and leather feels continuous again, both visually and to the touch.

The worn leather writing surface was replaced with a new leather inlay. The tooling along the edge was recreated in keeping with the original style. The leather was glued and pressed in place with care, resulting in a flat, calm surface suitable for daily use.

The wooden surfaces of the bureau were cleaned of surface grime and refreshed, bringing back depth and warmth to the wood without stripping away age or character. The drawers were adjusted so they run smoothly again, with wear addressed where needed.

Additional work included opening a locked drawer without a key by making a custom runner, and repairing further veneer losses discovered after cleaning the top.

The result is a desk that feels solid, balanced and honest again, restored to function and appearance, without erasing its history.
