In this video, I’ll walk you through what such a restoration entails. The weathered finish has been cleaned, shrinkage cracks in the side panels glued, drawer runners restored, and loose joints in the middle section re-glued. The sawn-off front legs have been reattached, and the rear legs raised. Let’s go through the process step by step, so you can picture how your cabinet might look after restoration.

We begin with the worn drawer runners.
Years of use had worn down both cabinet and drawer parts. Everything was dismantled. The runners inside the cabinet were sawn and fitted with new pieces of old wood. Drawer sides were also worn to the nail. I replaced the worn strips with carefully sized pieces, glued and nailed them in, ensuring the nailheads wouldn’t rub. The result: drawers that slide effortlessly again.

Shrinkage cracks in the side panels were caused by dried-out joints. These were opened—sometimes with alcohol and a wedge—then glued and clamped for a perfect fit.

Rebuilding the lower section came next. The client had saved the sawn-off legs, likely removed to lower the cabinet. I reattached them using epoxy and dowels. The rear leg was extended with a new matching piece, also dowelled and glued.

The cabinet had arrived in pieces with all glue joints failed. Each part was dismantled, cleaned of old hide glue, and reassembled using the original positioning. For the middle section, I dry-fit interior elements to check alignment before final glue-up.

*Drawer runners beneath the hanging drawers* were also worn. I trimmed away the curve using a circular saw and glued in pine strips, then planed them flush for a smooth slide.

*One large drawer had damage* at the front. I sawed a clean edge and replaced the missing section using a piece from an old drawer front with matching grain and patina. Invisible once restored.

*The doors had shrinkage cracks* and had to be taken apart. I glued loose panel bits and, if needed, added thin strips of old wood to restore the panel’s width before reinserting them. Proper clamping ensured flat, strong glue joints.

*For the finish,* I cleaned the cabinet and applied a hand-mixed blend, softened as needed with turpentine. Applied with a sponge and leveled with cloth, the result is a consistent tone. On vertical surfaces like doors, this allows better visual control. Wood always colors differently depending on the grain, angle, and light. That’s why I regularly step back and assess how the tones blend together.

*Every piece of wood colors differently,* simply because it comes from another part of the tree. Subtle differences are part of its charm.

*The original tinned brass hardware* was too worn to salvage. I replaced them with antique-style fittings that matched the cabinet’s character.
