Today the Church celebrates the memorial of Saint Cyril of Jerusalem, a 4th-century Bishop and Doctor of the Church.
On Wednesday, March 18, 2026, the Fourth Week of Lent, today’s Word of the Day reveals the profound and unbreakable bond of love God has for His people and the divine unity between the Father and the Son. Through the prophet Isaiah, we hear a promise of restoration rooted in a love more constant than a mother’s. In the Gospel, Jesus declares His own divine authority, which flows directly from His identity as the Son, who works in perfect harmony with the Father.
🙏 Readings:
First Reading: Isaiah 49:8–15 — The Lord promises a time of favor and salvation, vowing to restore His people and gather them from every corner of the world. He will lead them like a shepherd, ensuring they do not hunger or thirst. When Zion feels forsaken, the Lord responds with a powerful image, asking if a mother could forget her child. He declares that even if this were possible, "I will never forget you."
Gospel: John 5:17–30 — In response to accusations of breaking the Sabbath, Jesus reveals His divine nature, stating, “My Father is at work until now, so I am at work.” He explains that the Son can do nothing on his own but only what He sees the Father doing. He claims the authority to give life and to execute judgment, an authority given to Him by the Father, emphasizing that whoever honors the Son honors the Father.
🙏 Reflection:
Today’s readings powerfully counter any feeling of abandonment with the certainty of God’s constant care and Christ's divine authority. Isaiah’s prophecy is a tender and profound reassurance of God’s fidelity. In a world where we can often feel forgotten, insignificant, or lost, God anchors us in a love that is unconditional and unending. His memory of us is not passive; it is an active, saving force that promises restoration and comfort.
The Gospel of John builds upon this foundation of God’s love by revealing how this salvation is accomplished: through the Son. Jesus’s bold declaration of His unity with the Father is not a claim of independence, but of perfect intimacy and shared purpose. He is the visible sign of the Father’s work, the one through whom God’s life and judgment are dispensed. The Son’s authority is not a power He has seized, but a trust He has received. This passage invites us into the mystery of the Trinity, showing that the Father’s love, promised in the Old Testament, is delivered and made manifest through the Son.
🙏 Application for Today:
Reflect: In which areas of your life do you feel like Zion, thinking, "The Lord has forsaken me"? How can you invite God’s promise, "I will never forget you," into that space?
Pray: Ask the Father to deepen your faith in the authority He has given to the Son, Jesus. Pray for the grace to see Christ’s work in your life as a sign of the Father’s unending love.
Act: Choose one action today that demonstrates your trust in God’s work. This could be entrusting a specific worry to Him in prayer or honoring the Son by serving someone in His name, recognizing you are participating in the Father’s work.
🙏 Prayer:
Lord God,
My Father, thank You for the unshakable promise that You will never forget me. When I am tempted to doubt, remind me of Your constant love, more faithful than a mother’s embrace. Jesus, Son of the Father, I honor You as the source of life and truth. Help me to see the Father’s work in all that You do, and to trust in the authority You hold. May my life be a reflection of Your unified purpose and unending love.
Amen.
