This 2-day traverse of the underrated high ridges of Pirongia Forest Park is a great weekend trip from Auckland. We did it shortly after COVID lockdown finally ended in June 2020. Accessing from the north via the Kaniwhaniwha car park on Limeworks Loop Road, we ascended the Tahuanui Track taking 5 hours or so. The summit ridges are rough and worn and it takes a while to traverse the tops over the main Pirongia summit (956m) to Pahautea Hut area where we camped. The next day started with great views at dawn to Ruapehu and Tongariro and the surrounding Pirongia tops. We took the longer Bell Track down, passing over the 945m Cone summit. 8 hours or so later we arrived back at the car just after dark, having visited the tallest native tree in NZ and enjoyed the tight squeeze of Kaniwhaniwha Cave along the way.
