Mexico Volcanos Expedition 2025

Описание: In October 2025 I joined 11 others on a Mexico Mountaineering Expedition run by Jagged Globe. This 2-week trip headed initially to Mexico City. There after a bit of sightseeing we took in a warmup climb on nearby San Miguel (3800m) with fantastic views over the nearby metropolis. This climb was 15km with 945m of ascent taking a little over 7 hours.

We then moved on to Malinche (4,461m) which was a change in itinerary due to access problems on the initial objective. Ultimately this climb proved a good, but tough alternative. After a 6am breakfast we departed for the long climb again around 14.5km, but with 1471m of ascent taking us about 8hours. The accommodation before and after this climb was stand out, especially the old hacienda we stay at after the climb.

We then moved towards Iztaccihuatl where most of us attempted The Knees at 5,050m (a few also went on to the next peak, The Hips which were a little higher). Here we enjoyed the most random accommodation of the trip which was a Hacienda Motel with and attached theme park (including petting zoo with lamas, ducks, pigs, ducks, giraffe and apparently even a tiger cub, zip lines, foam party, maze, pedalos and swimming pools!! The next day was our approach to Base Camp on Itza (just 5.5km, 320m ascent and 2 hours hike), before our 3am departure for The Knees. All in all, this was a very tough day pushing altitude over 5000m for the first time. Starting in the dark we climbed slowly, crossing back and forth about four times across the main ridge. At dawn we are treated to a stunning sunrise of the spectacular erupting Popocatepetl. Finally, we made it to Itza’s Knee Rodilla (Luis Mendez) peak at 5050m. Today was 12.5km with 1200m of ascent taking just over 9hrs.

After a rest day in beautiful historic Puebla we head to our final peak, Pico de Orizaba at 5,630m. We stay at Jos’s Hostel under the mountain and then headed up a long 4WD track to the road end at 4200m before walking in to our high camp at 4650m (1.7km, 470m ascent and just under 2hrs)
We woke at 1 for a 2am departure. It was very cold and as we climbed the wind increased significantly. Pace slowed as we waited for gaps in the wind to progress and then pausing as another blast hit us. Finally, the top and a massive summit crater is revealed. The guide estimated the winds were 35km gusting 40 on the top. They don’t guide at 40+ so it was right on the cusp.
Pico de Orizaba is the third highest peak in North America, the highest volcano and the final peak on our Mexico trip. The climb today was 8km with 1300m of ascent, 1760m of descent and took a little over 10hrs (including the descent to the road end).

This was another fantastic trip with an awesome group of people, 7 of whom had travelled together before on JG trips. Hopefully the new team members join us again in the future as the team went well together.

Highlights were the warm and friendly people of Mexico, the food, culture and the beautiful Mexican National Parks.
