Armed with 'The Observer's Book of Trees', Ed ventures out into the countryside to attempt to identify some trees.
But it's not easy; so many different shapes and colours, and wooden things that bear some resemblance to trees but clearly are not trees. It's very much a learning experience, and by the end of the walk Ed is abe to differentiate between trees and boulders (the main difference between the two is that boulders have no foliage and generally remain the same size throughout their existence).
Starting in Strathblane, the walk initially follows a small part of the John Muir Way, with excellent views twards the Strathblane Hills, and especially the small iconic hill of Dumgoyne. To the north the mountains bear a coating of snow, and add immeasurably to what is probably one of Scotland's finest viewpoints.
We then pick up part of the West Highland Way, passing the Carbeth Huts and Craigallian Loch, before ending in Mugdok Wood where there are many trees and one or two boulders. A great little walk, laced with spectacular views and humour.
