It’s not just “easy miles.”
It’s not just “getting through winter.”
And it’s definitely not optional if you want to feel good in March, April, and beyond.
Base building is about capacity first—so when intensity, volume, and speed show up later, your body can actually handle it.
If you skip this phase now, the cost usually shows up later as:
❌ Aches and pains
❌ Poor performance when racing starts
❌ Asking “Why does this keep happening?” every spring
Yes—January training can feel boring.
That’s the point.
Right now is when you should be focusing on:
• Comfortable aerobic work
• Strength (especially stabilizers)
• Mobility and joint control
• Tissue health and load tolerance
• Building stiffness where it matters so your body is stable when it hits the ground
