Rainy morning in the cloud forest - Nature sounds

The cloud forests of Guatemala are perpetually wrapped in thick mist. Whether it's soft rain or fog drip, water is constantly condensing and dripping on to vegetation. While the dawn chorus is fairly subdued, the few birds that are vocal this time of the year do not disappoint. The sparse birdsong is explained by the fact that it gets quite cold overnight, and birds need to preserve their energy so they can keep warm and dry.

Occasionally there will be some mammal calls that add a bit of flavour to the mix. A lone male puma growls for a while, mournfully advertising his territory and looking for a mate. There is no response so he gives up and moves on. A more commonly encountered species in this area is the Yucatan black howler monkey, whose deep and bone-chilling howls are regarded as the loudest sounds made by a land mammal. There are several troops calling this area home and their calls can be heard from a great distance.

The mammal calls eventually die down, and the rain becomes quieter as well. This leaves a barely perceptible gap in the soundscape, which is promptly filled by more birdsong. A perfect start to a lovely day of cloud forest immersion. Enjoy!
