Here's our moody ascent of Guadalupe Peak—the Texas State High Point—located in Guadalupe Mountains National Park. We trade the Austin Capitol for a rugged hike to 8,751 ft, battling mist and wind on this classic West Texas adventure.
The Story:
They say everything is bigger in Texas, including the weather shifts. We started this trip at the State Capitol in Austin—the high point of politics and power—but our real objective was 500 miles west: Guadalupe Peak.
This climb is usually a hot, dusty hike. For us, it was a moody, atmospheric ascent into the clouds. With a massive winter storm bearing down on the region (the same one that would trap us in El Paso 24 hours later), we pushed for the summit to stand on the "Roof of Texas" before the ice shut everything down.
This video captures the stark contrast between the polished government buildings of the capital and the rugged, raw beauty of the Guadalupe Mountains.
