Climbing Nevado del Tolima is a rugged 4-day mountaineering expedition in Colombia’s Los Nevados National Park that transitions from deep jungle mud to high-altitude glaciers. This summit push on the 17,110ft volcano involvedtechnical scrambling, navigating the alien Paramo ecosystem, and a tactical midnight "chase" to catch the rope team before sunrise. If you've climbed Cotopaxi or Pico de Orizaba, or want an easier high altitude climb that's more than a trek, Tolima is a great choice.
This is Part 3 of my Colombian Trilogy. After acclimatizing in Bogota and tagging 16,000ft on Santa Isabel, it was time for the main objective. Starting on Christmas Day, we traded holiday traditions for 35 miles of steep jungle, sulfur-spewing crater rims, and some of the most unique high-altitude landscapes on Earth.
