This is the story of our hike of South Franklin Mountain. With snow in El Paso in the morning and a cloud looming over us as we started, we didn't really know what we were getting into until we ran into the chains. This was already our backup plan after escaping Carlsbad, NM with only hours to spare. A winter storm had descended, shutting down the highway.
What started as a desperate backup plan turned into a surprisingly rugged alpine adventure involving accidental Class 4 scrambling, a route protected by chains, and sweeping views from the US border looking deep into Mexico.
The Climb:
Objective: South Franklin Mountain (6,791')
Route: Ron Coleman Trail via McKelligon Canyon
Elevation Gain: ~1,900 ft
Class: 2/3 (with some optional spicy scrambling)
