This is an excellent lower body strength and stability exercise as it challenges the hip and knee unilaterally and reinforces proper motor control and movement patterning so long as form and technique are not sacrificed. Those that have had pain and sensitivity around the knee often tolerate this reasonably well as you can still load the knee safely and gain the benefits of a squat without having to go through positions that may be irritating. The bonus is an active hip flexor stretch on the back leg which aids in overall hip and pelvic mobility.
