Just a brief background, First Metro Consumer Fund (FMCF) is a thematic fund that only invests in companies that are related to the consumer sector. This fund is the only “pure play” consumer fund; It only invests in companies that directly serves or produces goods that serves the consumers. The Philippines economic growth has largely been driven by household consumption. Household consumption accounts for almost 70% of the country’s GDP. The continued growth in BPO industry, stable OFW remittances and the government’s Build, build, build program are seen to boost the country’s economic growth. This should translate to more jobs available. As Filipinos would have more jobs to choose from, consumer confidence picks up. As confidence picks up, so does their propensity to spend more and eat out more. This means companies that serve this market such as supermarkets, restaurants, among others. Retail operators and food manufacturers would greatly benefit from this strong consumption. FMCF hopes to capture the growing consumer confidence by investing in companies that should benefit from stronger consumption. Admittedly, FMCF is not for all. This fund is suitable for aggressive investors whose outlook is between 5 to 10 years. FMCF is also considered to be a high conviction as the performance of the fund is tied on how the theme is playing out.
