Part 1 takes us from Shaolianxiang to the highest point in the Tianlong Xianji Nature Reserve.

The route passes through impressive cliffside villages before leading to a seemingly endless winding road along a steep cliff inside the reserve. The views are absolutely stunning for hours. We drove on a weekday with very low traffic, allowing us to fully enjoy the breathtaking landscape.

For the most part, the road is wide enough for two cars, but there are some narrow sections where extra caution is needed. The sharp turns around rocky cliffs require a careful approach.

Along the way, you’ll find several scenic viewing platforms, some of which also have clean restrooms.
Important Notes:

Not recommended for beginners!

The road is prone to rockfalls and landslides—avoid driving in the rain.

No facilities inside the nature reserve—no restaurants, hotels, or shops. The journey takes much longer than the distance suggests due to the winding roads.

Recommendations:

Best time to drive: April/May and September–November in sunny weather. Avoid weekends and holidays if possible.

Accommodation: We started our round trip from the Crowne Plaza in Huangshan City (an excellent choice), but the entire journey took around 9 hours to return. If you can’t make it back, you’ll find the first homestays and restaurants in Shishixiang. Better options are available in Baijixiang (featured in Huizhou Tianlu – Part 2).
