Not sure how useful this video will be. There are only two kinds of players who pull on Variety banners: whales and character loyalists. You have to be damn sure about what you are getting when going for a 3/5 Field Variety banner right now, so there's not much point to an explanatory video.
I tend to pull on Variety banners if the kit has specific utilities you can't find elsewhere. For Thorton, man's packed with 50 dimensions of gameplay. He's got Restrain, Flinch, Paralysis, debuffs, Steel Zone, not to mention his offensive merits, a party-wide 20% multiplier, a shareable Trainer Move with Endurance (!), SE Next and Move Freebies. Honestly he might be one of the best Variety banners ever released. What I appreciate about Thorton the most is his cohesion as a Special enhancer. Both Restrain and Steel archetypes have been wanting one of those for a while now.

[0:56] - Nuking
3/5 Thorton nukes with Power Hold and Static Shock. Whenever Thorton attacks he adds Restrain, so he spread that multiplier in a single Discharge. Likewise, he could grid Hostile Environment 2 to handle Static Shock, but the probability of landing HE2 Discharge spread Paralysis is 45% per target. I'd call this flawed, but there is a good number of Supports who can handle Paralysis nowadays. That, and Thorton wants offensive buffs to complete his Sp.Atk anyway (Grand Entry 2 is difficult to grid). With both multipliers he nukes fairly hard, but an underappreciated aspect of Thorton is that he stacks SE Next given some turns. His nuke is commendable when accounting for Steel Zone.
Thorton got memed due to the fact he is a Field pair who only summons a field effect through his Field EX. I don't have much to add on whether Field pairs should get buffed or whatever. The tool is there and I'll use it.
BP Barry is a really good partner for Thorton because he grants +4 Sp.Atk and adds Paralysis. Being honest though, I could have Thorton solo the stage with constant Staggering 4 procs (one of his favorite Gauntlet tricks). Thorton improves any Steel-type DPS. I went with Strike Perrserker because it appreciates Barry's buff overlap and his Team Pinpoint Entry 2 should you forfeit the lucky skill. I thought about bringing Strike Magneton one last time, but even when it crits it's weaker than dry crit Perrserker. At that point you should just bring Hop/Solgaleo/Wikstrom. Variety Thorton also has perfect Theme Skill synergy with OG Thorton, but Field pairs have shitty Theme Skill boosts so the benefit isn't massive.
[2:58] - Off-type Steel Zone
Staggering 4 is amazing. If you have the patience to roll a decent Turn 1 Thorton can do a lil SS Lyra trolling and reposition the turn order in your favor.
Raihan is slow as balls so I had Thorton grid Metallic Acceleration 2. In conjunction with Brendan's Fast-Track 9 procs you get enough gauge for a fluid rotation even through Flinches. Remember Thorton stops consuming gauge once his Restrain chain gets rolling.
[5:18] - Off-type Discharge
Unfortunately Electric-weak Caitlin comes up in a couple weeks. I could wait until then to have a more complete showcase, but I think it's more useful to show Thorton while his banner is active. What I'd do is partner Thorton with some Paralysis Synergy beneficiary like Pikachu and spam Discharge like crazy. Regardless, Thorton has decent play in Special Electric Terrain archetypes. Thorton can accumulate SMUN stacks while performing useful actions like Metal Sound, and deliver a devastating Discharge once sides are removed.
[7:11] - Restrain Support
Something that made me interested in Thorton is Restrain. Restrain is the most exclusive multiplier in this game. So, why spend effort on it when it's hard to come by? Well, the pairs that do bother with Restrain have issues spreading it in general. Nessa and Selene need a turn to add it, Allister has to sac his Dynamax, SS Serena deprives herself of a set-up turn. Thorton handles Restrain for them, but he adds even more pressure with Metal Sound and his Factory Knowledge multiplier.
I have another recording showing Allister's Ghost mode. I used Event Victor as third so Allister eviscerated the stage quite convincingly, but I felt Allister's Poison mode benefits more from Thorton. F2P Poison partners are weaker and Allister just can't activate Hold Hostage 3 because he should be using MAX Ooze instead. If I wanted to be more deranged I'd use Thorton's Trainer Move on Janine and grid her with Ramming Speed, but I kept the lineup more palatable. Here is the Ghost recording if you are curious: • ooooo spoopy
[9:25] - Boosting SS Serena
Zerena has a couple big demands in Crit and Restrain. Well, would you look at that. Thorton handles both. I like Thorton here because he speeds up Serena's set-up pace within a ramp.
