STORYLINE:
China's Defence Minister Liang Guanglie arrived in the North Korean capital Pyongyang on Sunday, the first stop on his three-nation Asian tour.
It's the first time a Chinese defence minister has visited North Korea since 2006, according to Chinese state media.
Liang was met at Pyongyang's Sunan Airport by unidentified North Korean military officials.
He then was taken into the centre of the capital where his counterpart, Minister of the People's Armed Forces Kim Yong Chun officiated at a welcoming ceremony at a sculpture park which commemorates the Korean War.
Liang and Kim inspected an honour guard of the Korean People's Army (KPA).
Last week, a high-level North Korean military delegation visited China. That group was led by Kim Jong Gak, first vice-director of the General Political Bureau of the KPA.
Following his visit to North Korea Liang will travel to Japan and Thailand, a tour intended to boost military exchanges with the three countries, a ministry spokesman said on Thursday.
