STORYLINE:
On February 14th 2013 about 100,000 North Koreans took part in a state-organised rally to express their support for their communist state's recent nuclear test.
North Korea said it successfully detonated a miniaturised nuclear device at a northeastern test site on February 12th, defying UN Security Council orders to shut down atomic activity or face more sanctions and international isolation.
The rally took place in central Pyongyang's Kim Il Sung Square.
Countries around the world have criticised North Korea's most recent nuclear test, but news of this opposition has not been reported by North Korean state media.
Instead, North Korean news broadcasts repeat the government's official position, saying that February 12th's nuclear test was carried out as a result of North Korea's perception that the United States pursues a hostile policy against the communist state.
"The third underground nuclear test is a resolute and legitimate self-defence measure which was taken to cope with the hostile policy of the US against the DPRK, the US which is the sworn enemy of the Korean people," said Party Secretary of the Ruling Workers Party of Korea , Kim Ki Nam addressing the crowd from the balcony.
North Korea has emphasised to its citizens that the test was a success, and that they should feel proud of it.
In recent years, North Korean authorities have a custom of organising rallies like this to demonstrate that they can command support for the regime's objectives.
A similar mass gathering took place in Kim Il Sung Square in December 2012 after North Korea's satellite launch.
The U.N. Security Council has issued three separate resolutions on North Korea, in response to its nuclear and missile tests since 2006.
